While wrestling with the pressures of life, love, and work in Manhattan, Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte join Samantha for a trip to Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), where Samantha’s ex is filming a new movie.

Sarah Jessica Parker

is the main character in Sex and the City.

She is a writer for the New York Star with a column with th same title as the movie. When she is not writing about her relationships, sex, men, women, careers, etc. for her column, she is shopping (mostly for designer shoes) or chatting with her three best friends; Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte.

Patricia Filed’s comments:

« WE TOYED WITH LOTS OF DIFFERENT… »

Flashdance was the starting point for Carrie’s first flashback outfit, along with Rogers’ own ’80s wardrobe. « All of us had plastic see-through bags, » she says of working at Patricia Field’s Lower East Side shop. « I got mine out of storage. » But the biggest sticking point was the (flat!) shoes. « I’m sure it was extremely difficult for [SJP], » jokes Rogers. « We toyed with lots of different shoes, Doc Martens and things like that, but we thought it was classic Americana to be in a sneaker. »

Patricia Field’s comments:

« Oh, the ’80s. It turned out funny and I was glad. The first time I knew Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha was in 1996 or 1997. So I kind of tried to go back in history ten years and imagine, based on the way they looked in the late ’90s, how they would look in the late ’80s. There was also the comedic element to it because you’re putting 40-year-old women in outfits teenagers wear, so I couldn’t take it too seriously. I had to make fun of it a little. So I chose Madonna-esque for Carrie and and Charlotte is Lily Pulitzer. »

Patricia Field’s comments:

« Carrie arrives in Abu Dhabi in this outfit. It was very important to me that, ‘when in Rome, do as the Romans do.’ You have to respect your host. So if you’re visiting a country where it’s very important to them that you cover up–whether you agree or don’t agree–you cover your head. This one was a bit of a compromise because the exposed shoulder is a little scandalous over there. This is a Halston one-shoulder dress and I forget who made the turban. And I picked up that half-moon necklace in turkey. »

Patricia Field’s comments:

The luxe looks on camel-bound Carrie and Miranda were inspired by a long-ago trip to Egypt taken by the two costume designers. « It’s exciting to go together to a place, » Rogers says. « When we went to Egypt, we styled ourselves for four hours for the camels. You get into romance of it. »

Patricia Field’s comments:

« Carrie goes with Miranda to the souk, the market. Again, I wanted to cover her shoulders. This is a long skirt, but it’s really not a skirt, this is the crinoline from under some couture gown they sent us. I saw this slip underneath, thought it’s a gorgeous color, let’s use it as a skirt. »

She went in her closet to put something on to go to dinner with Mr. Big and she pulled out her old Dior newspaper dress. It was just a memory moment for my fans. I chose this dress because she looked fabulous in it from the beginning and still does. It was a very famous dress that she wore in the series. Back then it was very up-to-the-minute but it has endured for years. »

Kim Cattrall (Samantha Jones)

Samantha is one of four single friends portrayed in the series, a proud, confident, highly sexual woman. Most of her storylines revolve around the frequent sex and brief affairs she has. She is outspoken and a self-proclaimed « try-sexual » (meaning she’ll try anything at least once). She is portrayed as brash, straightforward, highly protective of her friends and unafraid of confrontation. She also displays nonchalance toward dating and monogamy and becomes uncomfortable whenever her sexual relationships take an emotional turn. In the movie, Samantha Jones is « bigger and bolder »- explains the desiner/stylist Patricia Field. The character has reached middle-life and some crisis is evident; her priorities have « somewhat » changed (as she tries to settle-down), but her fashion has only become more flamboyant. By bigger, Patricia Field is referring to Samantha’s shoulder pads. What a blast from the past! Most of her monochromatic bold-colored suits display 80’s shoulder pads that rival football players’! Her taste in accessories has also grown…literally! Big bold rings, supersized hats, purses and sunglasses. It is borderline ridiculous at times, but it reflects very much Samantha’s eccentric personality.

In white Dior, Samantha looks sophisticated. Gold accents and Alexander McQueen sunglasses finish the look perfectly. Cattrall explains how Pat Field works: « She keeps bringing things to the set—she finds something at the last minute, whether it’s a brooch or a hat or a bag. She has such attention to detail. »

Patricia Field’s comments:

The inspiration for Samantha’s headdress came straight from N.Y.C.’s Lower East Side. « In the ’80s I remember Pat wearing this hat, » Rogers said of the perforated headdress. « I was like, ‘Pat, you just have to pick the color of leather’ and we had the hat custom made. » The topper was recreated by its original milliner. « At first we were loving it for Kristin, we were thinking a Cleopatra feel for her, » she says, but it was the ultimately the fearless Kim Cattrall who rocked the hat. « It’s very Lawrence of Arabia. »

Patricia Field’s comments:

« This is when they’re getting a tour of their palatial hotel. There is a good story about this–see this red dress on Charlotte? I had originally picked a Palestinian scarf, red and white, and I thought, ‘This is the perfect thing to wear when you arrive in the Arab world, paying homage in the fashion way,’ and it went with her dress. And she told me Charlotte is married to a Jew, she would never wear a Palestinian scarf. So I said, ‘Alright, don’t wear it. Wear a stupid white scarf.' »

Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes)

miranda portraitMiranda Hobbes is a career-minded lawyer with extremely cynical views on relationships and men. In the movie, Carrie explains that she met Miranda in 1986/1987 in New York, when she heard Miranda crying in the next changing room at a department store (an allusion to her earlier masculine and questionable fashion sense). Miranda is from the Philadelphia area, and is Carrie’s best friend, confidante, and voice of reason. In the early seasons (tv series from HBO), she is portrayed also as masculine, but this image softens over the years, particularly after she becomes pregnant by her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Steve Brady, whom she eventually marries. She is also very promiscuous, but is a long way from the promiscuity of Samantha Jones. At one point, Miranda admits that she had already slept with 42 different men. The birth of her son, Brady Hobbes, brings up new issues for her Type A, workaholic personality, but she eventually finds a way to balance career, being single, and motherhood. Of the four women, she is the first to purchase an apartment, which she gives up when she moves into a Brooklyn townhouse in the final season to make room for her growing family.

Patricia Field’s comments:

« [Miranda] was just out of law school on her way to I don’t know where in her little lawyer silly suit, you know, very Miranda, right….with her silly hair do. Her hair was the best of all of the hair because she never, in the series, had good hair. She only got good hair in the movies. Because…[Cynthia] she doesn’t tell people what she wants. She’s like ‘you’re the professional, you know, I’m an actress, I’m a mother, I’m whatever’ and I’d [be] like, ‘Come on, let’s dance. You wanna dance or you want me to dance by myself in front of you?’ And as a result, everybody was putting their two cents into her look. Everybody. Sarah Jessica….the hair people, and she always looked ridiculous. And it was very hard to dress her because she didn’t step to the plate herself. It was hard for her…hard to get her to come together as a character. And after the series was over, five years passed, and in that five years she had a lot of big changes in her life. And it affected a lot in her life. I think she became happier, and I don’t know. It was a positive change in her life. She slimmed down. She started…being interested in her grooming. And you know, she felt better about herself somehow and it started to come out. And then I saw, and I’m like thank god I know where to go because she gave me a little hint. »

Her character style:

Miranda Hobbes has come a long way from her powersuits.

In the beginning of the Sex and the City series, the sassy lawyer’s signature look was all business. Even at after-hour drinks with Carrie, Charlotte and Samantha, Miranda was often clad in office appropriate duds such as black blazers and button-up shirts.

Miranda Hobbes may be a serious and sophisticated character from “Sex and the City,” but her fashionable look can be surprisingly easy to achieve. Whether or not you are a driven working woman like Miranda (or merely want to dress like one), here are tips and tricks for stealing her style. (source: Eonline.com & ehow.com) When clothing Miranda, Patricia Field often started with bold hues that would accentuate her ginger locks. They amped up the rich berry of Miranda’s sheath with matching heels. Miranda Hobbes’ fashion has mutated. She trades her sophisticated office-wear for polished city-wear. Miranda has become more « Park Avenue », with bolder metallics, expensive designer dresses, and bolder prints. Ironically, she moved to the suburbs of the city! Her lifestyle is still hectic, but her fashion has evolved to a very polished and crisp style.
